Conversations With People Who Read Montaigne is back for another stimulating season. This online series features discussions with scholars, writers, philosophers, artists, and others from around the world who read and have something to say about the Essais, Michel de Montaigne’s thousand-page open exploration of topics ranging from the use of thumbs to the ravages of colonial exploration. In each episode, Phillip John Usher will be joined virtually by a guest speaker who will first answer a Montaigne Questionnaire, before discussing their own work on, about, or inspired by Montaigne. A live Q&A will follow.
There will be no one school of thought, but an exploration of the various ways that the Essais might be read in the twenty-first century. All episodes will subsequently be made available on the Maison’s Youtube site, to form progressively an anthology of perspectives on the inventor of the essay genre.
